MW4 DMZ bosses: Lieutenants, Commanders and the Boss Board
Who the bosses are, how to find them, and why carrying a Lieutenant's case makes you a target.
Pre-launch guide. Written from official info released before early access. We update it as the game goes live.
DMZ has two kinds of boss. Lieutenants are named targets you can buy intel on at the Boss Board: intel guarantees that Lieutenant is in your next deployment, and each one drops a Dog Tag Case you must exfil with to progress the board. Commanders, like the Colossus, Deathstalker and Tank, roam Hajin, are marked on the Tac Map, have no intel to buy, and drop high-value loot, including 3D Printer ingredients.
- Boss Board opens after your 2nd DMZ Order
- Bought intel = Lieutenant guaranteed next run
- A Lieutenant's case shows your position to everyone
- Commanders are marked on the Tac Map
Hajin has two kinds of boss. Lieutenants are named targets you hunt on purpose. Commanders are huge threats that roam the map. Both pay well, but you need different plans for each.
Lieutenants vs Commanders
| Lieutenants | Commanders | |
|---|---|---|
| Intel | Buy it at the Boss Board | None. They just roam. |
| Where | Your intel guarantees they spawn in your next run | Marked on your Tac Map |
| Drop | DMZ Cash, rare loot and a Lieutenant Dog Tag Case | High-value loot, including 3D Printer ingredients |
| Competition | Several squads can hunt the same Lieutenant | Anyone nearby |
How the Boss Board works
The Boss Board opens at the FOB after you finish your 2nd DMZ Order.
- Unlock and buy intel on a Lieutenant. Each one first needs a set of challenges completed. Bought intel lasts one deployment, so make it count.
- Hunt them. Each Lieutenant has their own fighting style, from ambushes to sniping.
- Take their Dog Tag Case. Every Lieutenant drops one.
- Exfil with the case to progress the board. A case you take from another player counts too. The board appears to unlock Lieutenants one after another.
While you carry the case, your position is broadcast to every player on the Tac Map. The kill reward is yours either way. The case is for board progress, so decide if it’s worth the risk.
No intel? Climb a Lieutenant Hunt tower, a laptop on top of a comms tower. It finds the nearest Lieutenant and starts a Side Op (Download Intel To Locate Lieutenant). The LT Hunter trait gives extra paid intel when you activate one.
What Lieutenants drop
- DMZ Cash and XP, even if you leave the case behind.
- Their Dog Tag Case, always.
- Their signature weapon, a rare drop.
- A key to their personal loot room. If the weapon didn’t drop, it’s usually in that room.
The Lieutenants
| Lieutenant | What we know |
|---|---|
| Bale | Spetsnaz veteran, combat trainer and enforcer. Linked to Chang-san Air Base. Boss Board reward: 10,000 DMZ Cash. Drops Bale’s Dog Tag (Legendary). |
| Gorani | Ghillie suit and a water-deer skull. Carries an M4 and has an escort. Found in the woods above Hanrim Village. |
| Jang-ui | Has an encampment at NuriGO Mall, tied to Operation Shopping Hacks. |
| Iskra | Boss Board reward: 10,000 DMZ Cash. |
| Jin-Tae | Boss Board reward: 10,000 DMZ Cash. |
| Scavenger | Boss Board reward: 10,000 DMZ Cash. Drops Scavenger’s Dog Tag (Legendary). |
| The Doctor | Boss Board reward: 10,000 DMZ Cash. |
| Roze | Drops Roze’s Dog Tag (Legendary). |
Bale’s intel unlocks after you complete three DMZ Order chapters: Underground, Counterfeit and Human Intel. See all Orders.
An official story report also describes The Warden, who drops a key to a sealed room beneath NuriGO Mall. Plate Carrier recipes, rare components and a Weapon Manual were seen inside.
The Commanders
Commanders are always somewhere in Hajin. They are marked on your Tac Map when close, and your Team Leader warns you. They seem immune to many standard weapons, so bring a plan.
- First kill of each Commander: a DMZ Cash reward.
- Kill one and extract: valuable 3D Printer Ingredients.
- Every kill: big XP and an update to your Boss Board.
Colossus
A seven-foot, heavily armored soldier with a Minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. Don’t trade shots in the open. Use cover and keep moving.
Deathstalker
A helicopter-sized autonomous drone with two machine-gun turrets. It also shows up when your threat level hits 5 stars. Counter: capture a SAM Site (Capture a SAM Site). The battery then fires at hostile aircraft automatically. Stay close: enemies can retake the site.
Tank
A North Korean battle tank on patrol. Its main gun destroys a vehicle in one hit, a top machine gun covers infantry, and reactive armor cuts RPG damage. It carries loot needed to craft specific items.
Tips for boss runs
- Bring healing. A Medkit resets your Tourniquet mid-fight. See the beginner guide for how wounds work.
- Plan the exit first. With a case on you, the trip to the exfil is the dangerous part.
- Store the Dog Tags. Boss tags go in your Dog Tag Case. More in the Dog Tags guide.
Quick questions
How do I unlock the Boss Board in DMZ?
Finish your second DMZ Order. The Boss Board station then opens at the FOB.
Do I need the Lieutenant's case to get rewards?
No. Killing a Lieutenant still pays out. The case is only needed to progress the Boss Board, and you must exfil with it.
How do I kill the Deathstalker?
Capture a SAM Site. Once captured, the battery automatically fires at hostile aircraft like the Deathstalker. Enemy forces can take the site back if you move too far away.
