MW4 DMZ skill trees and traits: how Trait Points work
Three trees, 18 points and no respec. How Operator traits work, and what every known trait does.
Pre-launch guide. Written from official info released before early access. We update it as the game goes live.
Each DMZ Operator earns up to 18 Trait Points, one per Dog Tag level, and spends them in three skill trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist. You can put at most 9 points in one tree, the first trait in each tree is a random minor trait, and picks can't be undone. You can finish two trees, or spread your points over all three.
- 18 Trait Points per Operator
- Max 9 points in one tree
- Picks are permanent: no respec
- Each tree climbs 9 rows, bottom to top
Traits are how you shape an Operator in DMZ. Each Operator has three skill trees, earns points by surviving and leveling, and keeps every pick for good. So it pays to plan.
Try builds in our skill tree planner before you spend real points.
The rules
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| 18 Trait Points | One point per Dog Tag level, 18 levels in total (Dog Tag progression). |
| Per Operator | Every Operator earns and spends their own points. |
| Max 9 per tree | You can’t put more than 9 points into one tree. |
| 66 traits | 22 per tree: 6 Major traits (always visible) and 16 Minor traits (random). |
| Random first pick | The first trait in each tree is a random minor trait. |
| No respec | Picks are permanent. |
| Slots reveal as you climb | A row’s traits are revealed when you take a trait from the row below. |
So you have two kinds of build: finish two trees (9 + 9), or spread across all three. Rules source: Trait acquisition.
How a tree is laid out
Each tree climbs 9 rows from bottom to top. You take one trait per row, connected to your pick in the row below. Major traits come in pairs and are always visible; Minor traits come in groups of three and only show once you unlock the Major trait below them. That makes 22 trait slots per tree, 6 of them major. Points arrive after a successful exfil, and a great run can give you more than one. The planner shows the exact board.
Warfighter: fighting and staying in the fight
The combat tree. Kills reset sprint, extend effects and speed up healing.
| Trait | What it does |
|---|---|
| Adaptive Restock | Enemy hostiles drop one extra item. |
| Adrenaline Burst | Killing an enemy resets Tactical Sprint. |
| Combat Resistance | Less damage from explosives and enemy tactical equipment. |
| Combat Scavenger | Hostiles have a small chance to drop an ingredient or valuable. |
| Equipment Professional | Lethals and Tacticals slowly recharge after use. |
| Killing Spree | Kills extend active effects, up to double their duration. |
| LT Hunter | Lieutenant Towers give extra paid intel. |
| Metabolism | Slowly regain health lost to the Tourniquet. |
| Possum | Once per match, self-revive into Last Stand from death at full health. |
| Quick Fix | Health starts regenerating sooner after you kill an enemy. |
| Viper Sense | Hidden from thermal optics and AI targeting systems. |
Scout: looting, crafting and information
The loot and intel tree. More from every container, crafting in the field, better UAVs.
| Trait | What it does |
|---|---|
| Combat Scavenger | Hostiles have a small chance to drop an ingredient or valuable. |
| Container Looter | Chance of an extra item in containers. |
| Field Crafting | Craft from Common printer resources while deployed. |
| Hostile Looter | Hostiles sometimes drop an Uncommon ingredient, rarely a Rare one. |
| Investor | Slightly more cash when you extract. |
| Overwatch | UAV Towers you activate never expire. |
| Thermal Padding | Hidden from UAVs; Advanced UAVs only see you as a normal UAV would. |
| UAV Upgrade | Your UAVs get more range and time and become Advanced UAVs. |
Survivalist: healing, revives and getting out
The squad-support tree. Longer consumables, faster revives, safer exfils.
| Trait | What it does |
|---|---|
| Air Superiority | UAV Towers and SAM Sites last longer. |
| Consumable Duration | Consumables last longer. |
| Die Hard | Reaching an exfil in Last Stand calls it automatically; unlimited bleed-out time. |
| Faster Revive | Faster revives. |
| Free Revive | Your first Wound is repaired automatically. |
| Impact Smokes | Releases smoke when you are downed. |
| Metabolism | Slowly regain health lost to the Tourniquet. |
| Numb the Pain | Revives also apply Pain Killers and Smelling Salts effects. |
Random-roll traits
Some traits can show up as the random first pick in a tree: Combat Scavenger, Killing Spree, Metabolism, Quick Fix and Viper Sense. These five are confirmed; the full random pool isn’t known yet.
The rest of the 66: datamined, not confirmed
Only 25 traits are officially named so far. A list datamined from the beta names many more. It may be out of date, and some names may change at launch:
- Survival: Free Tourniquet, Survivor, Quick Regen, Battle Rage, Field Medic, Super Immune
- Looting and crafting: Lucky, Organized, Resource Hoarder, Keysmith, Lock Picking, Safe Tracker, Market Contacts, Extra Secure Slots
- Combat and gear: Auto Fill, Extra Lethal, Extra Tactical, Plate Pouch, Resupply, Kill Streak
- Stealth and intel: Stealthy, Evasive, Sensor Scan, Advanced Intel, Operator Tracker, Combat Scanner
- PvP: Bounty Hunter, Bounty Intel, Vampirism (take a Minor trait from a player whose Dog Tag you extract)
See every one on the traits page. We will confirm or remove each when early access opens.
Which tree first?
- New players: start in Survivalist. Free Revive and Die Hard forgive mistakes while you learn.
- Crafters and solo looters: Scout. Field Crafting and Hostile Looter feed the 3D Printer.
- Boss and PvP hunters: Warfighter. LT Hunter pairs with the Boss Board.
Once an Operator has all 18 points, Prestige resets the trees and adds a permanent trait on top.
Quick questions
Can you reset traits in DMZ?
Not directly. Trait picks are permanent. The only full reset is Operator Prestige, which removes your traits and gives you a permanent trait in return.
Are Trait Points shared between Operators?
No. Each Operator earns their own 18 points through their own Dog Tag level.
Can I max out all three trees?
No. With 18 points and a cap of 9 per tree, you can fill two trees, or split your points across all three.
