MW4 DMZ Dog Tags explained: ranks, trophies and the Dog Tag Case

Your Operator's rank and the trophies you take from others. Both are called Dog Tags, and both matter.

Pre-launch guide. Written from official info released before early access. We update it as the game goes live.

In short

In DMZ a Dog Tag means two things. First, it is your Operator's rank: 18 levels from Steel I to Onyx III, each giving 1 Trait Point. Second, it is a trophy: kill a rival or a boss, take their tag and exfil with it to add it to your Dog Tag Case, which opens at DMZ Level 20.

  • 18 Dog Tag levels, Steel I to Onyx III
  • 1 Trait Point per level
  • Dog Tag Case opens at DMZ Level 20
  • Case upgrades raise storage and bounty payouts

“Dog Tag” means two different things in DMZ. Your Operator has a Dog Tag rank, and you collect other players’ tags as trophies. Here is each one.

1. Your Operator’s Dog Tag rank

Every Operator levels up their own Dog Tag by earning DMZ XP and surviving deployments.

  • 18 levels, from Steel I to Onyx III.
  • Each level gives 1 Trait Point, so 18 points at the top. That is exactly what the skill trees need.
  • It is separate from your DMZ Player Level (1–70), which is for your whole account. See Operator Dog Tag progression.
  • An official screen showed an Operator at Steel II needing 20,630 XP for the next Trait Point.

The six ranks, in order, each with levels I, II and III:

RankLevels
Steel1–3
Bronze4–6
Silver7–9
Gold10–12
Damascus13–15
Onyx16–18

At Onyx III the Operator is fully leveled and can Prestige.

Your rank and MIA

If your Operator dies and goes MIA, a rescue brings back their Dog Tag rank, Traits and unspent Trait Points. The price rises with Trait Points: one Steel-rank Operator was shown at $50. Read more in MIA Operator recovery.

At 18 Trait Points an Operator can Prestige for a permanent trait.

2. Dog Tags as trophies

Kill a rival Operator, take their Dog Tag, and exfil with it. It goes into your Dog Tag Case, a FOB station that opens at DMZ Level 20.

Each tag in the case records:

  • the tag’s rarity;
  • the victim’s username;
  • the killer, since you can pick up tags from players someone else killed;
  • the date and time of death.

Your own tag, shown in your Loadout, displays your current Bounty and Operator Kills. Taking tags is also how hunters cash in bounties. See the bounty guide.

Boss Dog Tags

Lieutenants drop their own Legendary tags, like Bale’s Dog Tag, Roze’s Dog Tag and Scavenger’s Dog Tag. Each also drops a Lieutenant Dog Tag Case for the Boss Board. More in the boss guide.

Upgrading the Dog Tag Case

As your DMZ Level rises you can upgrade the case up to four times. Upgrades add storage for your collection and raise bounty payouts:

Like every FOB upgrade, they are printed at the 3D Printer.
