MW4 DMZ Operators and MIA guide: slots, rescue, insurance and dismissing
Your Operators carry your Traits. Losing one hurts, but it doesn't have to be the end.
Jump to a section
You start with two Active Duty Operator slots and unlock a third through DMZ levels; Vault Edition owners start with three. If an Operator dies without exfiling, they go MIA. Rescue them with DMZ Cash, and the price rises with their Trait Points. A rescue brings back their Traits, unspent Trait Points and Dog Tag rank, but most of their loadout is lost. You can also dismiss them and start a new Operator.
- 2 Active Duty slots at the start, a third through DMZ levels
- Vault Edition: 3 slots from day one
- Rescue cost rises with Trait Points
- Rescue keeps Traits and Dog Tag rank, not the loadout
In DMZ your progress lives in your Operators. Each one has their own Dog Tag rank and their own Traits. This guide explains slots, what happens when one goes MIA and how to get them back.
For the deployment control and its limits, see how to enable weapon insurance. To replace lost equipment cheaply, use the Free Loadout recovery guide.
Active Duty slots
| How | Slots |
|---|---|
| Everyone at the start | 2 |
| DMZ Player Level 15 | +1 (a third slot) |
| Vault Edition | Starts with 3 |
| Active Duty Slot Upgrade | +1 |
You manage them at the Operators station in the FOB. Your Stash and Bank are shared by all Active Duty Operators, so gear and cash are never stuck on one of them.
Each Operator levels up on their own
- Your Operator earns Dog Tag XP during deployments. Reaching the next XP threshold raises their Dog Tag level; a successful exfil does not guarantee a level.
- There are 18 Dog Tag levels, from Steel I to Onyx III. The full ladder is in the Dog Tags guide.
- Each level gives 1 Trait Point, up to 18. Plan them in the skill tree planner.
- At the top, an Operator can Prestige for permanent Traits. See the Prestige guide.
Because each Operator has their own Traits, a second Operator is a good backup and a chance to try another build.
What MIA means
If your Operator is eliminated and doesn’t exfil, they go MIA (missing in action). An MIA Operator can’t deploy until you deal with them. You have two choices:
- Rescue them with DMZ Cash.
- Dismiss them and free the slot for a new Operator.
Dismissing gives up ordinary Operator progress. Permanent Prestige traits are a separate entitlement tied to that Operator and survive dismissal, slot changes and skins; they are not shared across your roster. See the Operator Prestige guide before replacing an established build.
How a rescue works
| After a rescue | |
|---|---|
| Traits you bought | Kept |
| Unspent Trait Points | Kept |
| Dog Tag rank | Kept |
| Loadout | Mostly lost |
The price of a rescue grows with the Operator’s Trait Points. A fresh Steel-rank Operator was shown at just 50 DMZ Cash. A high-rank Operator costs much more, so always keep some cash in the Bank. The MIA Recovery Discount upgrade lowers the price.
Items that soften a loss
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Operator Rescue Beacon | A rare item that brings back an MIA Operator without paying DMZ Cash |
| Weapon Insurance Contract | Get an insured weapon back if you lose it, up to the number of contracts you hold |
| Backpacks with Secure Slots | Items in Secure Slots survive a failed exfil |
The Vault Edition’s Deployment Kit includes two Rescue Beacons and two Weapon Insurance Contracts.
Tips to keep your Operators alive
- Don’t take your best Operator on a test run. Use your second slot and the Free Loadout.
- Use your Tourniquet early. It gets you back up from Last Stand. See the health guide.
- Leave before the radiation storm closes in. See the exfil guide.
- Keep a rescue fund. Never spend your Bank down to zero.
Quick questions
How many Operators can I have in MW4 DMZ?
You start with two Active Duty slots and unlock a third through DMZ levels. Vault Edition owners start with three. An Active Duty Slot Upgrade at the FOB also adds a slot.
How much does it cost to rescue an MIA Operator?
It depends on how many Trait Points the Operator has. A fresh Steel-rank Operator was shown at 50 DMZ Cash, and the price climbs as they earn more Trait Points. The MIA Recovery Discount upgrade lowers it.
Should I rescue or dismiss an MIA Operator?
Rescue a high-rank Operator. Their Traits and Dog Tag rank took many runs to earn. Dismiss a low-rank one only if you want a fresh start and the slot.
