MW4 DMZ threat level and enemies: stars, tiers and how to escape

Stay hidden and Hajin stays quiet. Get loud and it sends everything. How the threat system works.

Pre-launch guide. Written from official info released before early access. We update it as the game goes live.

In short

AI in DMZ doesn't spot you instantly. The Stealth Meter turns white, yellow, then orange as they close in. Once you're spotted, AI kills raise a threat level from 1 to 5 stars: 1 star brings reinforcements, and 5 stars sends Deathstalker drones, Hunt Squads and riot-shield soldiers. Break contact and it calms down. Enemy soldiers come in four tiers, with Lieutenants and Commanders above them.

  • Stealth Meter: white → yellow → orange
  • Threat level: 1 to 5 stars
  • 5 stars: Deathstalkers, Hunt Squads, riot shields
  • 4 soldier tiers, then bosses

Hajin’s AI isn’t just in the way. It reacts to you. The quieter you play, the easier the run. Here is how the system works.

Stay hidden: the Stealth Meter

AI soldiers don’t see you instantly. The Stealth Meter warns you as they get close to spotting you:

white → yellow → orange, with an audio warning.

To lose them, go prone or get back into cover.

Weather helps too. Rain, fog, snow and wind roll in at random and are local, and fog reduces AI visibility just like yours (Dynamic weather).

Get loud: the threat level

Stealth isn’t all-or-nothing. Once you’re spotted, every AI kill can raise a threat level from 1 to 5 stars:

StarsWhat comes
★Reinforcements
★★–★★★★Stronger and stronger responses: attack helicopters, heavily armored troops
★★★★★Deathstalker drones, Hunt Squads and riot-shield soldiers

Each area also has its own Threat level, shown under your compass when you enter it. Rival players are not counted in it.

On top of that, a Hostiles Kill Count meter fills as you kill AI. When it’s full, a Hunt Squad is sent after you and you are Marked for Death.

How to calm it down: break contact. Disengage, for example into the woods, and the level drops. Details: Threat escalation.

Tip: stealth kills with melee, Throwing Knives or suppressed weapons let you move through high-threat areas without being noticed.

Enemy soldiers: four tiers

TierEnemy
1Tier 1 North Korean Grunts
2Tier 2 Armored Soldiers
3Tier 3 Armored Gas-Masked Soldiers
4Tier 4 Faceless Armored Soldiers

Above the tiers are Lieutenants and roaming Commanders. See the boss guide. Higher-threat areas hold tougher soldiers (see the Hajin map guide).

Quick questions

How do I lower my threat level in DMZ?

Break contact. Stop fighting and get away, for example into the woods, and the threat level calms down.

What happens at 5 stars in DMZ?

The game sends its strongest response: Deathstalker drones, Hunt Squads and riot-shield soldiers.

How do I stay stealthy in DMZ?

Watch the Stealth Meter: it turns white, then yellow, then orange as AI get close to spotting you. Go prone or back into cover to lose them. Kill quietly with melee, Throwing Knives or suppressed weapons, and use fog, which cuts AI vision just like yours.

What does Marked for Death mean in DMZ?

The Hostiles Kill Count meter on your HUD fills as you kill AI. When it is full, a Hunt Squad is sent after you and you are Marked for Death. Kill fewer AI, or use stealth, to avoid it.
